Fruta Fina is a body of work that continues from the series “Estoy aquí pero no soy yo”, which explores and questions the narratives of the Dominican identity and the contemporary Caribbean that arise from the fantasies about the insular territory, intersected by the historical processes of colonization and touristic exploitation.
Starting off from the popular Dominican phrase “privar en fruta fina”, a way of saying “putting on airs” or, in other words: a person’s behavior and attitude of superiority stemming from the possession of an object or enviable condition before their peers, Franz Caba configures, through landscapes, objects, animals and colloquial Dominican language, other sides to the Antillean space that are usually ignored in favor of the Caribbean paradise image.
Understanding the Caribbean as a territory of duality and through the use of fiction, this body of work builds an imaginary that confronts the idyllic stereotypes, reflecting upon subject such as the identity product, the otherness and the sense of belonging in the contemporary insularity.
