Lucy García, a psychologist by profession and a passionate gallerist, began her career as an art dealer in 1988, inspired by her father, one of the leading art dealers in the Dominican Republic. From an atelier in the colonial zone of Santo Domingo, she offered works by young artists as well as by great Dominican masters, including Gilberto Hernández Ortega, Jaime Colson, Plutarco Andújar, and José Ramírez Conde.
In 2009, Lucy García Gallery was formally established. For its launch, six deeply committed artists dedicated to using their art as a means to understand their world and to place the viewer within their experiences and artistic approaches were selected. Jorge Pineda, Quisqueya Henríquez, José Miura, Raquel Paiewonsky, Citlaly Miranda, and the Mexican artist Pepe Mar were the artists who inaugurated the gallery’s first collective exhibition, titled “Dangerous Beauty.” The subsequent exhibitions of the gallery included “Híper Pouf” by Raquel Paiewonsky, “Mundo Miura” by José Miura, “Cuarto de Curiosidades” by Pepe Mar, and “Solsticio de Verano” (a collective exhibition).
In 2016, with an exhibition entitled iNTRO, Lucy García Gallery presented the work of renowned Dominican and foreign artists, which she has continued to do since then in her Altri Tempi space, inaugurated with the collective exhibition Panorama in November 2021.
The artists of Lucy García Gallery have exhibited in important museums and art centers such as the Brooklyn Art Museum, MoCA North Miami, Museo del Barrio, Museo Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, Museo de Montparnasse, and in Biennials such as those of Valencia or Havana. Their works are regularly reviewed by media outlets such as The New York Times, Le Monde, El País, Art News, Art Nexus, and Diario ABC. Additionally, many of her artists have been selected to participate in international artist residency programs through the Davidoff Art Initiative.
Lucy García was selected to participate in international fairs such as Volta 2015 and 2016.
In 2020, she was invited by curator Juan Canela to participate in Zona Maco, Mexico City.
She was awarded by the Dominican Association of Art Critics for her exhibition “Especies y Espacios” as the best exhibition of the year and nominated in 2019 by 63m² as the best collective exhibition.
Furthermore, the gallery was selected for the solo exhibition of visual artist Iván Tovar in 2019.
Lucy Garcia Gallery is a dynamic art space founded since 2014, led by its founder and owner Lucy Garcia who has over 30 years dedicated to the art world. This gallery has as its main axis to break with the stereotypical vision of traditional spaces in the Dominican and Caribbean art scene, this being a place where art is revalued as a vital necessity rather than as an object of consumption, creating in each exhibition curatorial proposals of an art that is critical, bold and sophisticated, where we are betting on the emerging expressions and deepening the established art, both in its reflection and in the exhibition dialogue, proposing in each sample of its artists the visual narratives that mark a deep interest in its critical discourse.
Our space has become a generator of actions from their proposals that are not limited to the space itself, but rather we believe in collaborative work with other spaces in Museums, Cultural Centers and public spaces, as a way to energize our local scene; with this we go beyond our physical venue and our exhibitions, contributing to the educational and cultural field, turning our gaze on the Caribbean cultural strabismus, from a critical look that sees, watches and observes, from a parallel prism in a Caribbean that is so fragmented in its cultural richness.
Our catalog of artists are marking guidelines of the current projection of art in the Dominican Republic, from a contemporary look that puts in value its commitment to what we are as a country that is generating much interest by the greatest collectors and curators, who have visited our gallery on countless occasions being our collaborators and mentors, among which we cite: Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, Gerardo Mosquera, Alberto Cruz, María Amalia León and Héctor José Rizek.
