René Peña

Biography

Peña is a self-taught photographer born in Havana, Cuba in 1957. Graduated in English Language at the Higher Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages, University of Havana, Cuba. Throughout his career he has had numerous personal and collective exhibitions, both in Cuba and in the rest of the Caribbean, Latin America, the United States, France, Spain, Brazil and Japan.

With his work, he deals with creating a personal version of the world and its individuals. their are not subjects based on characters with their own name, rather they represent social positions, attitudes and ideologies common to many. Also the objects that he includes in his pieces they act as containers of meaning or icons, imprecisely named.

  • 1992: First Prize of Black&White in the III Photography Competition of the UCCI (Spain).
  • 1993: Mention in the II Salón Internacional de Fotografía Abelardo Rodríguez Ante (La Habana, Cuba)
  • 1993: Honourable Mention in the World Competition of Photography “The Family” organized by UNESCO/ACCU Japan (Asia Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO Contest ).
  • 1995: Honourable Mention in the I Salón de Arte Cubano Contemporáneo at the Fototeca de Cuba (La Habana, Cuba).
  • 1996: Prize “Premio Olorum Cubano” given by the FCIF (Fondo Cubano de la Imagen Fotográfica).
  • 2002: First Prize of the IV Biennial of the Caribbean (Santo Domingo).
  • 2002: Distinciòn por la Cultura Cubana given by the Consejo Nacional de las Artes Plasticas y el Ministerio de Cultura in the Palacio de Bellas Artes of La Habana.
