IVÁN TOVAR - (San Francisco de Macorís 1942- Santo Domingo 2020)
Dominican painter considered the greatest representative of surrealism in the Dominican Republic, Central America and the Caribbean. He is the most internationally sought-after Dominican visual artist of all time.
He was born in the province of San Francisco de Macorís in the north central part of the Dominican Republic on March 28, 1942, into a middle class family.
From an early age he showed an inclination towards the visual arts, especially painting, he graduated from the National School of Fine Arts of Santo Domingo in 1959, shortly after in 1963 he emigrated to Paris, France where after having obtained a scholarship thanks to the Alianza French in Santo Domingo and after completing her studies in that country she lived there for more than 20 years. He returned to his native country in the 1980s and died in the city of Santo Domingo in April 2020, at the age of 78, suffering from various health problems. Shortly after, the prestigious auction house Sothebys auctioned the work “La Menance” from 1974 reaching a historical maximum price for the work of a Dominican artist
